IEEE Day,SB RIT- Bits Over Beats: Build Your Own Modem
As part of IEEE Day 2025 celebrations, the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Student Chapter, in collaboration with the Department of ETE, Ramaiah Institute of Technology, successfully organized an immersive technical workshop titled “Bits Over Beats: Build Your Own Modem.” The event aimed to provide students with a practical introduction to digital communication systems, focusing on how data can be transmitted acoustically through sound waves.
Held on 16th October 2025 at the DES Hi-Tech Seminar Hall, the workshop offered participants a complete hands-on experience, blending theory with creativity. Under the guidance of Dr. Venkatesha Muniswamy, Professor and Head of the Department of ECE at SVIT, participants explored modulation techniques such as FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) and PSK (Phase Shift Keying) to transmit binary data via audio. Teams encoded text into sound using Python, transmitted it through speakers, and decoded it back using microphones and signal processing methods.
The session fostered curiosity and innovation as students experienced firsthand how communication principles can be applied using simple tools. Interactive demonstrations, live experiments, and real-time decoding challenges kept participants engaged throughout the event. The hands-on activity provided valuable exposure to digital signal processing, data modulation, and GUI-based decoding workflows — all made accessible for beginners.
The event witnessed active participation from students across various disciplines, with attendees earning certificates of participation for their successful modem builds. Bits Over Beats truly embodied the IEEE Day spirit by transforming complex communication theories into an engaging, practical, and enjoyable learning experience — inspiring future innovators to Build, Transmit, and Decode the language of technology.
