Basic information about IEEE

IEEE Day is an annual event that celebrates the first time in history when engineers worldwide gathered to share their technical ideas in 1884. One of the IEEE Day’s objectives is to show the ways IEEE members, in local communities, join together to collaborate on ideas that leverage technology for a better tomorrow.

In the spring of 1884, a small group of individuals in the electrical professions met in New York, USA. They formed a new organization to support professionals in their nascent field and to aid them in their efforts to apply innovation for the betterment of humanity—the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE). That October, the AIEE held its first technical meeting in Philadelphia, PA, USA. Many early leaders, such as founding President Norvin Green of Western Union, came from telegraphy.

IEEE Day is celebrated on the first Tuesday in October. This year, IEEE Day will take place on 1 October, 2024.

All IEEE members can celebrate IEEE Day! Participating in local IEEE Day events, hosted by the local IEEE Section or IEEE Student Branch, is a great way to meet and collaborate with those who share the same passion and enthusiasm about technology and IEEE.

IEEE Regions can organize a wide range of events, such as IEEE benefits, technology and awareness sessions. They can also provide financial support to the local IEEE Sections for their celebrations to increase participation and awareness, and inspiring them to foster stronger ties among IEEE members.

Local IEEE Sections can organize and hold IEEE events, collaborate with local IEEE Student Branches and promote IEEE Day for the purpose of spreading awareness of IEEE.

IEEE Student Branches are encouraged to organize events on campus (either technical or non-technical). All IEEE Day contests are open to IEEE Student Branches. IEEE Day is an ideal opportunity to build awareness about IEEE and recruit new members.

Contests

Each year there are contests. Descriptions and rules of each contest are posted on the IEEE Day website. Members are encouraged to take pictures and videos during the celebration.

Contests platform will be made available once the contests are activated. Make sure you have your submission  ready and the event is reported on the events form.

The prizes are of monetary value in US dollars and are different for each category, first, second and third prize. These prizes are awarded to the Organizational Unit of participating members.

The winners of the contest are announced approximately 10 days after the close of the voting period. Check the rules for dates.

Events Submission

The best place is on our website: www.ieeeday.org. The submission form asks you details about your event. Once your submission has been reviewed and approved, it will be shown on the world map so the other members will see your event and join!

Both. Any kind of event plus entertainment is welcomed. We encourage Leveraging Technology For a Better Tomorrow to be the focus but it is not mandatory.

You can get ideas from the events organized by OUs in past. You can access last year’s events by clicking here

You can hold a series of workshops. However, each would be a considered a separate event and submitted as a separate event on the events map.

Unfortunately, no. You should work with your local IEEE Section for funding your event.

We prefer to see IEEE Day t-shirts and any color t-shirt is acceptable. In case you don’t have enough funds to print the t-shirt, you may show the IEEE Day logo on a banner or poster. The logo can be colored or black & white. If you are conducting an online event, a print out of IEEE Day logo would suffice. Photo-shopped logos are not acceptable.
