IEEE Day
In celebration of IEEE Day, which occurs annually on October 1st, the IEEE Society of Sultan Qaboos University designed and implemented an innovative and interactive display. This creative project was showcased in the main lobby of the Engineering building, a high-traffic area frequented by numerous students throughout the day.
The centerpiece of this celebration was a specially crafted mirror embedded with smart technology. The mirror’s design incorporated an ultrasonic sensor, demonstrating how simple circuits can be used to create engaging and aesthetically pleasing installations. When a person approached the mirror, the sensor detected their presence, triggering a hidden array of lights to illuminate behind the reflective surface. These lights spelled out “IEEE Day” in a dazzling display, catching the attention of passersby and creating a moment of surprise and delight.
This interactive exhibit served multiple purposes. Primarily, it was a unique and eye-catching way to commemorate IEEE Day, raising awareness about the organization and its global impact. Additionally, it provided a tangible example of how fundamental engineering principles can be applied to create interactive and visually appealing experiences. The mirror installation effectively bridged the gap between technical knowledge and practical application, showcasing to engineering students and faculty alike the creative potential of their field.
As the main attraction for the IEEE Day celebration at Sultan Qaboos University, the smart mirror drew considerable attention. Throughout the day, many students passing through the Engineering building’s main lobby had the opportunity to interact with the display. This constant flow of foot traffic ensured that the IEEE Day message reached a wide audience within the university community.
The choice to place this interactive exhibit in such a prominent location demonstrated the IEEE Society’s commitment to engaging with the broader student body. It not only celebrated the organization’s special day but also served as a conversation starter, potentially inspiring students to explore more about IEEE and its role in advancing technology for humanity.
This innovative approach to celebrating IEEE Day highlights the creativity and technical skills of the Sultan Qaboos University’s IEEE Society members. By combining technology, interactivity, and a touch of surprise, they successfully created a memorable experience that embodied the spirit of innovation that IEEE represents.
