IEEE Day 2020 Virtual Events

IEEE BTS PULSEDescription: BTS invites attendees to meet the experts over three days in three sessions and hear their answers to vital industry questions.

Although BTS is unable to host our annual Broadcast Symposium in-person events due to the current global environment, we can still fulfill our integral role of industry information sharing. Get vital industry questions answered by top experts during a three-day virtual event hosted by the IEEE Broadcast Technology Society.

5G Broadcasting will be the focus of the first session chaired by Peter Siebert, Broadcast Industry Advisor; Will 5G be the future of DTT broadcast? What role will 5G play? Will 5G replace or complement DVB or ATSC Broadcast?

Madeleine Noland, President of ATSC will chair the second session which will review ATSC 3.0 Implementation and Roll Out; What is the ATSC 3.0 rollout status? Who will deliver the devices? How will NextGen TV features entice the end user? Is spectrum re-pack an opportunity or an obstacle to ATSC 3.0 rollout?

To conclude the event, the third session chaired by Guy Bouchard, Director of Transmission Systems at Tele-Quebec will focus on Broadcast Disaster Preparedness; Lessons learned during the pandemic? Were broadcasters ready? Radio broadcast, the ultimate solution for emergencies? Can there be a truly disaster resilient infrastructure?

Similar to the IEEE Broadcast Symposium and our other industry offering, this virtual event will continue to provide attendees the opportunity to earn multiple Continuing Education Credits or Professional Development Hours. When registering for the technical sessions you will have the option to purchase CEUs or PDHs.

New Tools, New Devices, New Fabs: Three change-makers and three pathways in one burgeoning innovation ecosystemDescription: Activate and IEEE Entrepreneurship are collaborating to present New Tools, New Devices, New Fabs: Three change-makers and three pathways in one burgeoning innovation ecosystem!

On 2020 October 06, we will present a live Q&A with the panelists. Fittingly, this session coincides with this year’s IEEE Day, the theme of which is Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow. IEEE Entrepreneurship is honored to offer innovative events that amplify this theme and connect to our mission to foster entrepreneurial engineering and technological innovation for the benefit of humanity.

Watch the panel session now - via - and get to know the speakers.

Then, register for the live Q&A - via - and be sure to include any questions you like to ask.

Event Description:

When she started grad school, Nishita Deka never expected to go straight from Ph.D. to CEO.
Not so for Mitchell Hsing, for who had long been focused on technology transfer. And J Provine was well ensconced in academia when he was drawn into a major pivot to founder.

While their backgrounds, innovations, and target markets vary widely, these three engineers are all on the same path to commercialization—a path that started at Activate.

Does Science Fiction Influence our Technical and Social changes?Description: “Anything one man can imagine, other men can make real.” ― Jules Verne, Around the World in Eighty Days.

Science Fiction fans point to examples of the similarity between Star Trek 's ‘communicators’ that seemed revolutionary when the programs first aired and the ever present ‘Cell Phones’ of our present day as evidence of the influence of science fiction on our civilization’s technical directions. They point to how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr dissuaded Nichelle Nichols (Lieutenant Uhura) from leaving the Star Trek cast because of the positive influence her presence was having on the culture of American audiences. IEEE Puerto Rico and Caribbean Section celebrates IEEE DayDescription: IEEE Puerto Rico and Caribbean section celebrates IEEE Day with a virtual event that will offer different technical and non-technical presentations aiming to the common interest as a strategy for recruitment.

We identified that the most interested topics are:
• Educational
o Covid-19: Whys of prevention process, decisions taken, meaning of the languages used, how it was spread worldwide.
• Technical
o Power: Puerto Rico have been suffered natural disasters that impacted the power distribution in island.
o Medicine: Due to the pharmaceutical presence in the island, topics that merge the technology and health in one single solution are very attractive for our professionals.
o Software: The huge amount of data generated on a daily base due to the exaggeration usage of technology during quarantine security breaches are major issues that requires assessments and counter measures for data protection.
o IEEE history: IEEE members and non-members learn of IEEE historic technology advantages leaded by the IEEE.

Using this investigation as a start point, we have developed the IEEE Day offering described below:
 A Testimony of Technological Innovations: A talk based on a documentary from the IEEE History Center, spanning from the IEEEs founding in 1884 to the present day. Highlighting some of the IEEEs innovators and their contributions to humanity.
 Novel Micro - and Nanotechnologies for Biomedical Applications: This presentation talks about Lab-in-a-tube ultrasensitive sensors for the detection of diverse biomolecules towards early diseases diagnosis, and microsystems for the study of cellular processes at the microscale. Medical Microrobotics which includes different types of sperm-hybrid microrobots and microcarriers designed for assisting gametes towards in vivo assisted fertilization. These sperm-hybrid microrobots have also been used as drug carriers towards gynecological cancer treatment.
 COVID-19: How is getting managed in Puerto Rico?: This presentation will be explaining how the COVID-19 is being addressed in Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rico Department of Health (PRDOH) is the leading authority in the management of diseases in the island. But how the PRDOH is managing the spreading?
 Big data techniques and Internet of Thing: a look at technical challenges and cybersecurity assessment: The huge amount of data generated on a daily base due to the exaggeration usage of technology requires efficient processing techniques for information recovery. Big data analytics provide some efficient technique for this purpose. No doubt that a lot of challenges are facing technology with each advance. Security breaches are major issues that requires assessments and counter measures for data protection. In this talk, I will be addressing major advances in big data analytics, Internet of things (IoT) and cybersecurity best practices.
 Distributed Generation and its Implications in Transmission and Distribution Systems: This presentation will be explaining the different stages of energy, production of energy, power needs in the 21st century and nowadays renewable energy.
