IEEE – Cool Math Games Speed run Competition
UBCO students took a break from the books and gathered for an exciting night of gaming, nostalgia, and friendly competition at our Cool Math Games social event! Hosted by IEEE UBC Okangagan Student Branch, this event was all about bringing back the thrill of classic online games while creating a lively space for students to connect, enjoy some downtime, and embrace their inner gamer.
The event lineup featured Blokorz, Run 2, and Fireboy and Watergirl, offering students a variety of challenges that required strategy, precision, and quick reflexes. Each game brought its own unique test of skill:
Blokorz: Students worked their way through tricky levels, rolling and balancing a block with expert timing to avoid falling off edges. Every level introduced new twists, and competitors raced to complete each one in record time.
Run 2: With high-speed runs through space-themed obstacle courses, students embraced their inner speed as they leaped from platform to platform in this thrilling, reflex-based game. Each round saw intense focus, cheers, and gasps as players attempted to avoid plummeting into the endless void.
Fireboy and Watergirl: This cooperative game brought out team spirit as pairs worked together to navigate treacherous levels filled with lava, water, and puzzles. Communication and timing were crucial here, as only the best-coordinated teams could master the levels and make it to the finish.
Prizes and Competition
Throughout the night, students competed in rounds of each game to earn points, and those who ranked the highest at the end were awarded fun prizes: 50$ for 1st place, a 10$ gift card for second place, and a boardgame for third, alongside IEEE merch for winners of each game. The competitive energy was high, but friendly, and even those who weren’t top scorers had a blast cheering each other on and celebrating everyone’s achievements.
Social Activities and Snacks
For those looking for something more laid-back, we set up a board game corner stocked with classic favorites. It quickly became a gathering spot for students to unwind, chat, and dive into friendly rounds of games. To keep everyone energized, we offered free pizza throughout the night, and it was a hit! Students grabbed slices between games, refueling before heading back for another round or settling down to socialize.
A Nostalgic Blast and a Chance to Connect
The event wasn’t just about the games; it was about recreating the fun of after-school hangouts, bonding over shared memories of childhood online games, and enjoying a screen-free alternative to study stress. Students connected over common interests, discovered new friends, and shared laughs and stories about their early gaming days. The excitement and nostalgia made the event a unique and unforgettable experience.
