Launch of open access publishing in collaboration with IEEE

On October 1st 2024, the Department of ECE & Library and Information Centre at Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT), in collaboration with the IEEE Student Branch, celebrated IEEE Day. This event commemorates the historic gathering of engineers in 1884, where they shared their technical ideas for the first time. Since 2010, this significant event has been celebrated annually on the first Tuesday of October. In alignment with this tradition, NMIT has recently entered into an agreement to cover the article processing charges (APC) for open access publications. This initiative provides an excellent opportunity for all faculty and students at NMIT to take advantage of open access publishing.

To mark the launch of this initiative, Dr. Dhanu Pattanashetti, Senior IEEE Client Manager, shared valuable insights into the benefits of this collaboration. He offered guidance on how to maximize the opportunities available for research and publication. Dr. Pattanashetti was warmly welcomed by Dr. Parameshachari B.D., Head of the Department of ECE, while Dr. Gangadhar K.C., Chief Librarian of NMIT, read his profile to the audience.

The talk focused on the institution’s proactive commitment to fostering research activities and exploring the intricacies of open access publishing. The talk featured a presentation by Dr. Pattanashetti, an expert in the field. He highlighted the college’s strategic initiative to allocate 15 tokens specifically for open access publishing. This initiative aims to promote the dissemination of scholarly work, thereby enhancing the visibility and accessibility of research findings within the academic community.

During the talk , Dr. Pattanashetti emphasized the critical importance of selecting appropriate journals for publication. He provided insights into the distinctions between open access and hybrid journals. He informed participants that the IEEE Access journal typically requires a review period of 4 to 6 weeks for submitted articles, a timeframe that researchers should consider when planning their publication timelines. Additionally, he elaborated on effective strategies for preparing manuscripts, including adherence to submission guidelines and maintaining high-quality standards in research output.

Furthermore, Dr. Pattanashetti conducted a practical demonstration of the IEEE website, guiding attendees on how to navigate this valuable resource. He showcased the accessibility of crucial information, including detailed descriptions of various journals, methods for downloading comprehensive lists of journals, and tools for checking impact factors, metrics essential for assessing the relevance and prestige of potential publication venues.

Overall, this talk provided attendees with a wealth of information and practical guidance, equipping them with the necessary tools to enhance their research output and navigate the complexities of the publication process effectively.
