Rhetoric Rumble
The “Rhetoric Rumble” debate event, organized by the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology at KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology, provided a dynamic platform for students to explore the societal impacts of technology through critical debate and discussion. Themed “Culture or Code: The Debate of Our Times,” the event encouraged participants to deliberate on the balance between cultural preservation and technological advancement. Through two engaging rounds, students showcased their understanding of technology’s influence on education, healthcare, and communication, while also reflecting on its ethical implications. Round 1 focused on individual debates on the importance of cultural values versus technological progress, with judging criteria emphasizing content, delivery, rebuttal, and knowledge. Round 2 adopted a Youth Parliament format, where participants represented ruling and opposition teams to propose and debate policies. Key evaluation metrics included teamwork, leadership, policy development, and debate skills. The event fostered critical thinking, collaboration, and exposure to diverse perspectives by engaging students across multiple academic years and connecting them with external stakeholders. Participants gained valuable insights into the dual nature of technological advancements—its benefits and challenges—and were inspired to use technology for positive social change while considering ethical dimensions. Beyond enhancing their debating and policymaking skills, the event created a sense of community and networking opportunities, enabling students to envision impactful careers in technology and society.
