EUREKA 2024 STEM Outreach Program
The EUREKA 2024 STEM Outreach Program was a two-day initiative organized by the IEEE Student Branch at NSS College of Engineering in collaboration with the IEEE Kerala Section SIGHT and IEEE SIGHT AG at NSSCE. This program aimed to inspire high school students to explore the intersection of technology and global challenges. It focused on enhancing understanding in critical areas such as environmental sustainability, climate change, and disaster management, while aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program served as a platform to empower students to engage in innovative thinking and develop solutions that promote a sustainable and equitable future.
The outreach initiative was conducted in four educational institutions: St. Ann’s Senior Secondary School, NSS HSS Akathethara, MESEM HSS Olavakkode, and GHS Ummini. Each session was meticulously structured to provide students with a blend of theoretical insights, practical applications, and interactive experiences. The activities were designed to stimulate curiosity in young learners and bridge the gap between classroom education and real-world problem-solving.
A notable feature of the program was the hands-on workshop focused on constructing emergency torches. Participants actively engaged in assembling functional torches utilizing basic electronic components, including light-emitting diodes (LEDs), batteries, and resistors. This activity not only introduced students to foundational concepts in electronics but also illustrated how low-cost, accessible technology could be employed in disaster situations. The torches assembled during the workshop were distributed to the students, providing them with a tangible outcome to signify their efforts.
Another significant highlight was the drone demonstration conducted by Rinsha P, Kerala’s first licensed female drone pilot. Her presentation captivated the students as she showcased the application of drones in disaster relief and environmental monitoring. She elucidated the technical aspects of drone operation and their critical applications in scenarios such as flood assessment, damage evaluation, and search-and-rescue missions. Rinsha’s personal journey and achievements served as an inspiring narrative, encouraging many students to consider future career opportunities in drone technology.
The program also featured a demonstration of a flood detection system, which utilized Internet of Things (IoT) technology to illustrate early warning systems for disaster management. This session provided students with a practical understanding of how contemporary technology can be harnessed to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters. Additionally, it stimulated discussions on how such systems might be adapted to address local challenges, thereby encouraging students to think critically about the application of technology within their own communities.
Throughout the program, the organizers accentuated the significance of key Sustainable Development Goals, including Quality Education , Gender Equality, Reduced Inequalities , and Climate Action . The sessions not only highlighted the relevance of these goals in the context of global development but also encouraged students to integrate them into their academic projects and future endeavors. The program ensured equitable participation from both male and female students, with an emphasis on fostering inclusivity and gender equality in STEM education.
The collaborative efforts of IEEE SB NSSCE, IEEE Kerala Section SIGHT, and IEEE SIGHT AG NSSCE were evident throughout the initiative. Drawing inspiration from successful projects previously executed by IEEE Kerala Section SIGHT—such as the assembly of torches for disaster relief, solar-powered mobile chargers, and the introduction of STEM kits—the team effectively demonstrated the real-world impact of humanitarian technology. These examples resonated profoundly with the students, motivating them to engage in similar projects and to envision their role in fostering socially impactful innovations.
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Students conveyed their enthusiasm regarding the interactive nature of the sessions and their newfound understanding of how technology can address societal challenges. Educators appreciated the practical orientation of the program, which effectively bridged theoretical concepts with real-world applications. School administrators commended the program for its relevance to academic objectives and its potential to inspire students to pursue careers in STEM fields.
